Hooray for the New School Year!

Greetings Cog readers! I hope you all had a great summer. I want to hear all about your summer readaholism. What did you read? What are you hoping to read? I am grateful to our new blog followers and posters. I really hope to get the blog rolling this year. Mr. Eich, come back to us. You are hilarious and your posts make my day. What's on your coffee table these days?
Remember that you are free to appropriately discuss any media that young adults might be interested in. You can discuss tv shows, movies, books, graphic novels, music, video games, social networking sites. You name it!
Soon, I will begin this year's reading advocacy campaign, so make sure you're caught reading a book when we run through the halls in search of people to photograph. Let's get pumped about reading y'all!
I'm overdue in throwing out the first discussion topic and since the movie "The Help" just debuted, I'd like to discuss that. I read the book and watched the movie and loved them both. Thoughts?

  3. The Help focuses on a group of affluent, white women and African American nannies living in Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960's. Racial tensions are high and the maids and other African American citizens are discriminated against by the people of Jackson. They are forced to use separate bathrooms, live in separate parts of town, sit at the back of public buses, and sit back in silence when they are called racial slurs. Sadly, those are the least of the injustices, as some African Americans in Jackson were even beaten to death.

The African American nannies work hard to raise the children of their white bosses and the children, who loved the nannies at one time, grow up to discriminate against them in many cases. One character, a progressive white woman named Skeeter, is determined to expose the wrong doings of her white friends by writing a book from the viewpoint of the nannies. Skeeter's mother, who is dying of cancer, constantly pressures Skeeter to improve her looks and get married; however, Skeeter wants to focus on a career that will change the world, while enabling her to stand up for what she believes in. She is determined to publish a book that exposes the cruel mistreatment and discrimination the nannies face by interviewing the nannies and giving them a voice in her book.

Skeeter suffers personal heartbreak because of her choice and because of poor race relations at the time, the nannies could be killed for telling their stories. Read the book to find out if the nannies tell their story and if Skeeter accomplishes her goal of making a difference in the world. . . .

  9. I can't wait for The Hunger Games to come out. If we had a GKHS student and library blog follower be an extra in that movie it would be the coolest thing since sliced bread. Definitely read the book first! Comparing books and movies is great, except for the times when the movie totally disappoints. I have a feeling this one won't.

I agree it will be AWESOME to be an extra hopefully it will be by the book i know that they cant copy everything from the book like harry potter or the movie would cost more and end up to be like 6 HOURS LONG!!! but if they stick the plot and DON'T add Justin beeber to play peeta then i will be very VERY happy! (especially the justin beeber part)

  16. oh and by the way, i donated a book called world war z. all those zombie lovers out there should totally check it out. its very gripping as the living dead takes over the world and eerily tells you what would happen in this what if scenario. the main character interviews wwz veterans and you can easily picture the violence as people around the world remember the horror that nearly drove humans extinct. you should check it out and also get the other books on zombies such as the zombie survival guide and recorded attacks by Marx brooks. there is a long line so hurry!
